Get Longer, Stronger Lashes Naturally

Get Longer, Stronger Lashes Naturally

Last update: 22 July, 2015

Do you suffer from eyelash envy? If yours could use a boost, don’t despair – and stay away from the falsies.  You can get longer, stronger lashes naturally. It’s not just about vanity, either. Eyelashes help to protect your eyes from invasion by both dirt and infection. So, really, it’s important to keep them fortified and protected. We’ll show you how.

Keratin is the protein that’s responsible for imparting elasticity and resistance in your lashes. It strengthens and beautifies them, too. Still, your eyelashes are quite delicate creatures. UV rays, mascara residue (left behind when you don’t remove your makeup properly) and chemicals in cosmetics can weaken them.

Truly healthy eyelashes are generally long and thick. They don’t impede your vision and they don’t break easily. If this isn’t familiar to you, don’t fret. We’re willing to bet that you can start nourishing your lashes today. Check your cupboards. We’re going to give you some easy, homemade remedies to try.

Dark lashes

Before you start applying stuff all willy-nilly, you’ve got to remove stuff – namely, all that gunk you slap on in an effort to approximate healthy lashes! Make it a routine to remove your makeup thoroughly. Never, ever sleep in it. Not only will you wake up with a technicolour pillowcase, but your skin and eyelashes will be damaged. No, we don’t care how much you had to drink last night. Wash your face. Oh…and try to wean yourself off the eyelash curler, too. If you use it every day, your lashes will become brittle and break. End of lecture.

Some say that blinking frequently stimulates your eyelids. It’s a kind of exercise routine, apparently. It’s worth a try. We’d recommend boosting the regime with a castor oil cream that will condition, nourish and hydrate the capillary layer. Now, let’s talk a bit more about some simple ingredients that are recognised for their effectiveness in promoting perfect lashes.

Lubricate those lashes

Golden oil

Looking to whip your lashes into shape? The antioxidants in castor oil, almond oil, avocado oil and olive oil fight the free radicals that cause premature ageing. They protect your capillaries, too. When you use them on your eyelashes, they’ll give them strength and thickness.

Mix these four oils together in a glass jar and use the blend to gently remove your makeup. All clean? Now, apply one drop to each eyelash line and go to bed.

Go nuts

Peanuts

Peanuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, cashews…heck, pick a nut. It’s bound to be loaded with B vitamins. For stimulating hair growth, you won’t find a better food. Munch away!

Castor oil is rum’s chum

Castor oil

In a bottle, add three tablespoons of castor oil to a bit of rum. It sounds odd, but it really works. Trust us. Carefully apply this potion to your lashes with a cotton pad. Cover your eyes with a mask and sleep on it. The next day, gently remove with warm water. ¡Ay, caramba! Check out those peepers peering back at you.

Cuckoo for coconut oil

Cosmetic coconut

Coconut oil is soothing, nourishing and can stimulate hair growth. To enjoy its benefits, simply work a tiny bit of it into the tips of your lashes and leave it in overnight. Incidentally, it’s brilliant at removing mascara and it’ll keep premature wrinkling at bay.

Green tea’s a treat

Green tea

Make a cup of green tea as you normally would. Wait for it to cool to room temperature, then dip a cotton pad in it. Apply the tea to your lids and lashes, then place the damp cotton pads on your closed eyes. Let them rest there for 10 minutes, then remove. For even better results, make this a nightly ritual.

Brush for beauty

Brushing lashes

Dip a clean mascara wand in a mild moisturising cream. Apply it as you would your mascara, taking special care to lightly coat your lashes. This will promote faster growth.

Lemons for lashes

Grated lemon

Don’t you love lemons? They’ve got to be the most versatile fruit going. You can use them for everything from cooking to cleaning. Do you want them anywhere near your eyes, though? Yes, you do! Grate a bit of lemon peel and add a teaspoon of olive or castor oil. The super citrus will get to work and help boost the strengthening effects of the oils.

Don’t go mad with the mascara!

Brush wands

It can be tempting to make up for any shortfalls by overcompensating with the black stuff. Do try to abstain. While it’s true that mascara’s magic makes your lashes appear longer, thicker and more voluptuous…that’s all it is: magic. Indeed, much of it actually causes damage. It can make your lashes brittle and prone to breakage. When you do succumb to its charms, just be sure to remove mascara properly and gently. May we suggest coconut oil?

A good, old massage…

Eyelids

Increase blood flow and stimulate growth with a massage. You don’t need to use any particular product. Just make it a habit. Every night before you go to sleep, wash your hands well and use your fingertips to gently massage your eyelids and your eyelashes. Bonus: it’s extremely relaxing, so you should rest well.

Don’t neglect the nutrients

Carrot smoothie

Fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants. They’re those things that fight free radicals – you know, those little nasties that are the main culprit when it comes to weakened cells and tissues? Top them up with clean plant protein and plenty of vitamins. Your hair, nails and lashes will all benefit. For hastening growth and strengthening hair, three essential are carrots, peanuts and wheat.

We hope that we’ve given you some easy and practical tips for cultivating luscious lashes. Get into the groove and you’ll be ditching the fakes in no time!
