Flaxseed. You’ve probably heard it mentioned in certain circles, but it’s worth investigation. Did you know that you can lose weight with ground flaxseed? Though not technically a grain, flaxseed nonetheless shares similar vitamin and mineral levels. It’s packed full of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, too. Indigenous to Egypt, its popularity is global. You’ll find it in the form of oils, supplements, whole seeds and ground into meal.
If your aim is to lose weight, ground flaxseed is best. Why is this? In this form, flax is more stable. The oil has a tendency to oxidise – and it contains quite a lot of unsaturated fat, as well. You won’t have a problem eating more flaxseed. You can start off the day by blending some into your fruit smoothie or a swirling it into a big bowl of porridge. It can be added to salads as a flavourful topping or dissolved in water or juices. In fact, flax is often used as an egg substitute in baking. You just use three tablespoons of water to one tablespoon of ground flax as a direct replacement for one egg. Bear in mind that your cooking times may have to be altered. Flaxseed means things cook faster!
