Though soda drinks are very refreshing and thirst-quenching, they are not great for your health. You are putting your teeth at risk, even if they contain artificial sweeteners. A recent study on carbonated drinks and sodas has investigated these type of drinks in a way that they can be just as bad for your health as some kinds of illegal drugs.
Why is soda bad for your health?
Sodas can be very damaging to your health. To keep your teeth healthy, it is best to avoid or limit your consumption of them.
There are many reason why you should avoid consuming soda too frequently. Some of those reasons include the following:
- Sodas do not contain any nutrients at all and have a large amount of sugar in them. Sugar is full of calories.
- Consuming too many of these drinks could cause type II diabetes.
- They can also cause other illnesses, including depression.
- They can lead to an increase in fat around the waist.
- They increase bad cholesterol levels.
- They can cause your blood pressure to increase.
All of these aspects are linked to the excessive consumption of carbonated and soda drinks.
Are sugar free drinks bad for your health?
Although light soda drinks don’t contain sugar, they do contain citric and phosphoric acid which can damage your teeth. They can cause stains, cavities and other dental problems that could be serious.
Recent studies by specialists in General Dentistry have demonstrated that extreme consumption of soda drinks could have the same effect on dental health as illegal drugs, such as cocaine, crack and methamphetamine.
This study focused on a 30 year old woman who had drank sodas for approximately five years and had the same dental health as a habitual cocaine user. This damage could have been caused by the acids in these drinks. Many sports drinks also contain acids and could cause the same amount of damage on the teeth.
Good dental health is vital for both cosmetic and general health reasons. Good digestion starts in the mouth, so good dental habits will affect your health in a positive way.
Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day with a good quality toothpaste and toothbrush. Use a mouthwash and floss too for the best benefits. You should also visit the dentist every six months for a check-up.
